Superb Content Battle of Chattanooga Letter. 3-page letter written in purple ink on large bifolium stationery, Chattanooga, Tennessee, October 2, 1863, from A. B. Richards to his sister Emeline in Illinois. In part: "... you have heard of the big fight. well I was thare. we faught the whole Confederacy. there was no use of forming a line hardly, for they would come with 4 or 5 lines and march right through but not before we mowed down heaps of them and they did the same for us. the fight was for Chatanooga and we got it but we got flaged in giting it you see we had to flank them to git them out. we marched 50 miles down into Georgia and they got large reinforcements from their army in Virginia. Came after us. we was on the west side of the look out mountain and they was on the east side... each man determined not to yeald untill he was overpower'd. nearly half of McCooks Corps was killed and wounded." He details the losses incurred by various companies and describes how he was struck on the wrist by a musket ball which knocked his gun out of his hand. Returning to the front line, he "was struck in the mouth by a piece of a shell knocking out two teath and knocking me down... the rebels followed us the next day and are now in sight of us. if they attact us they will be whiped for we have been fortifying day and night... The rebels that we took prisoner was well clothed and looked well. one of them that belonged to longstreets Corps said that we was the best men that they ever fought... this ware will last a long time yet I feare."
