    Union Navy Blockade Document

Stephen Clegg Rowan Document Signed. One page, printed, 7.75" x 9.75", dated April 14, 1862, appended in manuscript "Respectfully forwarded to...officers Blockade of Beaufort". Signed "S C Rowan" along with two other unidentified signatures at the bottom of the document. Fine.

This circular provides the latest intelligence on several vessels suspected of being Confederate blockade runners. The first report comes from the U.S. Consul in Liverpool, England and identifies the departure dates of a rebel gunboat, the Oreto, the steamer Annie Childs, and a bark, the Mary. Detailed descriptions are given of the latter two vessels. The consul at Halifax, Nova Scotia reported the arrival of the ship Consul, having arrived from Liverpool "with a valuable cargo of merchandise, adapted to, and believed to be designed for, the Southern market." Captain Stephen Clegg Rowan had already seen active service during the Mexican-American War, participating in the capture of Monterrey. Early in the Civil War, as captain of the steam sloop Pawnee, he made gallant attempts to relieve Fort Sumter. In 1863 he was assigned to blockade duty off Charleston, South Carolina.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
