    Description

Sixth Plate Ambrotype Portrait of John McCullock, 11th Virginia Inf., as a Cadet at the Albemarle Military Institute C. 1858. The Albemarle Military Institute was founded by John Bowie Strange (VMI '42) in 1854 and operated with great success until the outbreak of the Civil War. Strange was appointed Lt. Col. of the 19th Virginia and killed in action at the Battle of South Mountain, Md. Sept. 14, 1862. An old ink note behind the image identifies it as "John McCullock my father when he attended military school at Ivy Depot, Va.". McCullock wears a single breasted frock coat, opened exposing military vest underneath, with all buttons and collar insignia tinted gilt. On the table at his side is a M1839 forage cap with the letters AMI neatly delineated in gilt on the front. Excellent quality and condition in what is clearly the original geometric leather case, which is about perfect. McCullock enlisted October 10, 1862 in Co. K, 11th Virginia Inf. and remained on the rolls through Dec. 3, 1864. The 11th Virginia was heavily engaged throughout the war including the The Seven Days, Antietam, Gettysburg and nearly every other major action of the Army of Northern Virginia. Great image.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
