    Description

Scarce and Impressive Ninth Corps Badge of a Twice Wounded Officer. Worn by a member of the Sixth New Hampshire Infantry, this high quality Ninth Corps badge is in excellent condition. The scroll-shaped top bar retains its T-bar pin back and measures over 1" wide and ¼" high. It bears the engraved name "Capt. S. G. Goodwin." Suspended from the bar by a 1" tall white ribbon is a heavy, detailed Ninth Corps emblem measuring 1 3/8" tall. The entire badge is almost 2¾" tall and 1 3/8" wide. Condition is excellent with only some age soiling on the ribbon and tarnish on the silver finish.

Samuel Goodwin joined Co. B of the Sixth New Hampshire as a 2nd Lt. in November 1861 and rose to Captain by July 1862. He was wounded at North Anna River on May 26, 1864 and again at Bethesda Church barely a week later. He was breveted Major "for gallant and meritorious service" on April 2, 1865 and mustered out in July. Goodwin's insignia is a great example of a high quality wartime corps badge worn by someone who surely "saw the elephant."
