    Robert E. Lee: St. Louis Harbor Documents and Map. Wonderful group of items related to improvements in St. Louis harbor, a project which was overseen by a youthful Robert E. Lee in 1837 and 1838. 1) 8" x 3" invoice to the "Illinois R. Road Company" for "34 1/2 cords of ash wood @$2.73 per cord" (in the hand of Robert E. Lee, with two-line memo below in a clerical hand). The reverse of the invoice is a printed certification that the items invoiced were necessary "to the improvement of the Harbor of St. Louis" signed "R E Lee/ Lt Engrs". 2) House of Representatives Document No. 298, containing Lee's full report to Chief Engineer General C. Gratiot, submitted to the Secretary of War and Speaker James K. Polk. 3) 45 1/2" x 19 1/2" engraved folding map of the "Harbor of St. Louis, Mississippi River. Oct. 1837." surveyed by Lee, drawn by Montgomery C. Meigs, likely tipped into a volume at some time.
