Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan: Printed Orders Once Owned by Alexander Gardner. 1) 5.5" x 8.5" handbill detailing "General Order No. 46", "Headquarters Army of Northern Virginia, March 23rd, 1863", signed in type by R. E. Lee. The order designates March 27th as a day of fasting, prayer and thanksgiving for the success of the rebel cause. Lee hopes that "Almighty God... will continue his merciful protection over our cause; that he will scatter our enemies and set at naught their evil designs..." Ironically, in a little over three months, their winning streak came to an end at Gettysburg. 2) 5.5" x 8" handbill with message from George B. McClellan, "Head-Quarters, Army of the Potomac, Camp near Rectortown, Va., Nov. 7, 1862". In this "farewell address", McClellan thanks the troops and announces "An order of the President devolves upon Major General Burnside the command of this Army." Minor separation at one horizontal fold. Part of an archive of material owned by photographer Alexander Gardner, some of which was sold in our August 25th sale and some of which we are offering in this sale.
