Revolutionary War Period Royal Provincial Volunteers Shoulder Belt Plate. Silver, 50.5 grams, 60.32 mm x 81.84 mm. The obverse of the oval plate is engraved with the Georgian crown, "G. R." engraved immediately below in block script and "RPV" in large cursive letters below that. The reverse features a 1 ½-inch hook and two 14 mm in diameter beveled-edge lugs. There are no hallmarks present, which one might speculate would indicate American versus English manufacture. The Royal Provincial Volunteers attribution is also speculative. Certainly there is extant Loyalist buttons with "RP" and the Georgian crown. The consignor indicates that the shoulder belt plate was discovered in southeastern Virginia several years ago with a rather worn Civil War period Federal leather belt, which is included with the lot. Again, why the earlier plate and belt were together when found is a mystery.

Condition: Excellent. With a pleasing uniform patina.
