    Description

Relic: Turned Wood "Vase" from the USS Cumberland. Relic from the Collection of J. S. Reigart. The finely turned wood relic, 5.75" high, has a paper label that reads, "Vase made of a piece of the U.S. Frigate Cumberland sunk by the Rebel Ram Merrimac, Mch 8, 1862." The Cumberland had a long and illustrious career as a United States naval ship. Commissioned in 1842, Cumberland served as flagship of the Mediterranean Squadron before being ordered to the Gulf of Mexico to support United States forces during the Mexican War. In the late 1850s Cumberland was stationed in African waters to suppress the slave trade. With the outbreak of the Civil War Cumberland was on blockade duty. On March 8, 1862 Cumberland was rammed by the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia (Merrimack) off Newport News, Virginia. The United States government immediately started salvage operations in an effort to recover $40,000 in gold onboard Cumberland. The ink is light on the label, but the relic is in excellent condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
