Regulation Civil War Painted Eagle Infantry Drum. The drum gives every appearance of being virtually untouched since the war and completely original. 16 1/2" diameter, 12" high. The heads appear to have very long sides with the hoops pulled down very tight, possibly accounting for the discrepancy in the height of the drum, although there is also the possibility the drum was shortened slightly during the period for use by a diminutive drummer, but, if so, unquestionably done during the period with period reinforcing hoops inside top and bottom with patina that match the rest of the interior of the drum. Perfect printed paper label inside opposite the air hole "Manufactured / By / A. Rogers / Flushing, L. I." The drum appears to retain the original heads, snares, ropes and leather tighteners. Also the original snare tightener. Missing two tighteners and one of the tighteners is actually a 3/8" wide leather strap with small iron buckle wrapped around the ropes several times to serve as a tightener. The number 49 is written in pencil both inside the drum as well as on one of the tighteners. It is interesting to note that the drum surfaced in the exact area of Pennsylvania where the 49th Pennsylvania Inf. was organized. Brass tack design around the air hole perfect. The paint on both the red hoops and the eagle decorated panel is 98% intact and absolutely untouched with wonderful mellow age patina. A beautiful condition regulation issue Civil War eagle drum with only the enigma of the height to consider as a possible negative, else as nice an example as we've seen in years.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
