Rare US M1840 Foot Officer's Sword with Historic Mexican War Inscription. Regulation M1840 foot officer's sword by Ames. The hilt retains 30% of the original gilt, else perfect, with correct folding counter guard etc. Etched blade near mint, retaining most of the original luster. Obverse with oak leaves, arms and flags panoply, and eagle with motto. Ames etched logo "N. P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield" at base just above the ricasso. Obverse with similar motifs but Large US surmounted by Indian wielding tomahawk. The regulation scabbard and brass mounts are excellent with the exception of a break just above the bottom mount, very old, with no loss, and easily repaired. Inscribed in script horizontally on the reverse of the throat "Presented by / Major Edward Webster / to / Captain Stephen Hoyt / in Mexico 1847". Major Edward Webster was the son of iconic American statesman Daniel Webster. Webster entered service from Massachusetts in Jan./Feb. 1847 and is specifically cited in Zachary Taylor's official report on the Battle of Buena Vista for his gallantry in handling a battery of artillery under his command. Webster died of typhoid in San Angel, Mexico on 23 Feb. 1848. His body was returned to Massachusetts where he was buried May 3, 1848. Captain Stephen Hoyt, also from Massachusetts, and entering service the same time as Webster, served with the US Commissary Dept. in Mexico through the course of the war, from 2/16/47 to 7/20/48. He also had Civil War service with the Commissary Dept. as a Captain from 9/16/61 to his resignation on 5/26/64. Interestingly the sword is accompanied by the original receipt when it was purchased from Norm Flayderman in January 1964 for $87.50. Beautiful example of a rare US regulation officer's sword with a great inscription.Auction Info
