Rare Plaster Bust of Confederate General Robert E. Lee by Master Sculptor Herbert Barbee.
The son of prominent sculptor William Randolph Barbee, Herbert (1848-1936) inherited his father's genius and succeeded to his tasks. Periodically studying in Italy, under his father's tutelage, Barbee became one of America's most prominent and prolific sculptors and by the end of the 19th century was renowned for his likenesses of prominent Virginians including George Washington, Stonewall Jackson, John Mosby and Robert E. Lee. Barbee's most notable work is a memorial to the Confederacy in Luray, erected in 1898; called the "Confederate Heroes Monument", or sometimes "Barbee's Monument", its erection is said to have been inspired by a visit to the battlefield at Gettysburg, although the more immediate reason for its creation was as the focal point of a proposed park, called Henkel Woods Park, whose construction was never completed. Its design is said to have been based on the memory of a sentry Barbee saw standing on the mountain above Thornton Gap one winter's day during the Civil War. The bust we are offering is depicted on this monument.

The signed bas-relief measures 22" x 13" x 1 7/8", and is set in a 26 1/2" x 30 3/4" ornate frame. The bust is in excellent condition with no cracks or chips. We only know of one other example of this magnificent piece, which resided in the former Confederate Memorial Hall in Washington, DC. This is the second Barbee sculpture we have had the pleasure to offer. The other example was of Confederate General John Mosby, lot #72056, which realized $21,510 in our June 2008 Signature Civil War Auction.
