Rare Civil War New York-Style Canteen. A rare variant Civil War canteen approximately 8-inches in diameter and covered in twill jean cloth. The shoulder strap consists of painted fabric with the edges folded onto the back and stitched in the center. O'Donnell, in his book U.S. Army & Militia Canteens 1775-1910 suggests that the canteen's narrow spout lip is in line with an 1862 or early 1863 manufacture. He further indicates this date would correspond to the New York Depot's July 31, 1862 contract with New York City merchant William Watkins who agreed to supply 1,000 regulation canteens with black-enameled shoulder straps which would be sufficient to supply a single regiment.

Condition: Very good. A few scattered areas of soiling and small stain, otherwise a very nice example. Lacks the stopper. Small old, small paper label with illegible writing mounted on the cover near the spout.
