Rare Civil War Lambert Patent Tourniquet in As-New Condition with Instructions. Dr. Thomas S. Lambert, of Peekskill, New York patented his tourniquet in January 1862. The tourniquet consists of a 18" long x 1.5" wide piece of maroon herringbone twill cloth tourniquet strap. The strap is secured to two, rectangular, slightly concave metal ends equipped with fold-down metal loops used to lock in the strap. The metal ends were used to apply pressure to the affected limb when secured in place with the strap. Both metal devices are painted with the original maroon paint. One of the metal ends is stamped with the maker mark "LAMBERT'S PATENT / JAN 7, 1862." An oval-shaped, two-piece tin case houses the tourniquet and is japanned in the same color as the metal devices. The case is virtually perfect, retaining 96% of its painted finish while the case inside shows approximately 99% of the original, shiny bright finish. The tourniquet set also includes the original paper directions of use for the device. The papers are clean and original but suffer a bit from being stored in the case. A fine but grim Civil War medical specimen that would display well in any collection.
