Rare Civil War Era Canteen. 8.75" tall (to the top of the spout), 6.5" at the widest point, 3.25" deep, and 5.5" at the bottom. Stamped "R" and "M" on the outer body on either side of the spout. This example is in excellent condition and retaining what appears to be a portion of the leather carrying system. First referenced in The Civil War Collector's Encyclopedia by Dr. Francis Lord in 1963, the canteen and mess kit were later pictured and described in Mike O'Donnell's, U.S. Army & Militia Canteens 1775-1910: Its purpose was to combine the functions of a canteen with those of a camp kettle and boiler. Included were two separate pans with folding iron wire handles. A smaller rectangular soup pan or drinking cup fit over the bottom of the water chamber to carry in the field.
