    Description

Rare Circa 1861 Confederate Swallow-tail Lance Pennant.
16" x 10.5" glazed or polished cotton pennant with eleven stars in the canton, modeled after the First National pattern. Entirely hand-stitched with "flat seams" and hand-cut stars arranged randomly and sewn to one side of the canton. Affixed to a board using six small adhesive patches. Finished on three sides. Red stripes have mutated to brown. Some small holes and pulls in the fabric, but very good overall. It is attributed to Hetty Cary and Laura Lacy of Richmond. Wooden lances were made in Richmond by Burger & Brother who subcontracted the pennants to Hetty & Laura. The lances were intended for use by such units as Wise's Virginia Legion; however, most were ultimately used as company guidons or affixed to pikes. Several museums house examples of the pennant, notably the Museum of the Confederacy (now the American Civil War Museum).
