    Description

Rare Blakeslee Ten Tube Civil War Spencer Cartridge Box Originally designed by Erastus Blakeslee of the 1 Connecticut Cavalry in 1864, whose unit was armed with Spencer carbines, to facilitate the loading of the seven metallic rimfire cartridges into the magazine of the carbine. This example retains eight of the original ten tin cartridge tubes. It is unmarked but the leather is generally in excellent condition with no finish crackling or flaking. The brass sling loop is in place although the leather mounting loop is torn. The leather sling itself is torn just forward of the mounting rivet and missing. The loop with leather tab The leather tab with loop and brass finial on the rear base of the box are all excellent. The lid is present, latch tab and brass closure finial about perfect. The lid is sound and intact with the exception of at the back where the stitching has popped and the top has detached, with no loss from the riveted leather back tab that is attached to the hinge. A good representative example of this extremely rare Civil War cartridge box and superb for display with a Spencer rifle or carbine or general Civil War collection as one of the rarest of all the Civil War issue cartridge boxes.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
