Rare and Colorful Chasseur Cap Worn by New York's Famed "14th Brooklyn." This distinctive kepi is among the most eye-catching examples of headgear seen during the Civil War and was worn by members of the 14th New York State Militia, which later became the 84th New York Infantry. The "14th Brooklyn," as it was called, was garbed in a special chasseur uniform highlighted by a short jacket, red pantaloons and this colorful cap, which is accompanied by a letter of authenticity prepared by uniform authority Les Jensen. Unlike many units that abandoned their special uniforms as the war progressed, the 14th kept its singular clothing until mustered out in 1864. This cap has a black wool band and crown and bright red wool body. On the front is sewn an embroidered infantry hunting horn with the numerals "14" in the bend, indicating that the original wearer was an officer. On the crown is a circular red wool I Corps badge measuring approximately 1.6 inches in diameter, edged in a single strand of twisted gold wire. The original patent leather chin strap with its brass buckle is in place, affixed at each end by three-piece New York state seal buttons, made by "Scovill Mf'g Co. Waterbury." The bound visor is also firmly attached and has a deep green underside. Inside, the 2 inch wide brown leather sweatband is complete and the deep green polished cotton interior shows very little wear. There are no manufacturer's markings. The cap is exceptionally sound and has only a few moderate moth holes in the body and crown. As Mr. Jensen concludes, "this cap appears to be one dating from the Civil War years." Here is an opportunity to acquire an excellent specimen of a most appealing cap as worn by a famous, hard-fighting regiment.
