Possibly the Last Written Communication from Confederate Brig. Gen. Felix K. Zollicoffer. 4" X 6 1/2" autograph note signed, headed "Brigade Head Quarters, / Beech Grove Jany 18, 1862 / Capt. Rutledge Will have four guns of his battery - two howitzers and two six pounde(r) ready to march at 6 oclock this evening. Let the gun carriages and caisons (sic) each have two extra horses. F K Zollicoffer / Br. Genl." Attached at the top is an old 3/4" X 6 1/2" strip of paper bearing the pencil script note, "This is his Last pen scratch / He was killed at Fishing Creek" Zollicoffer was killed at Mill Spring/Fishing Creek, Ky. on the morning of 18 July, in a case of mistaken identity, when he approached Federal troops believing them to be Confederate. A few very minor/light scattered stains and partial separation at folds, else excellent, bright and crisp. Nicely mounted and framed. Document with an almost eerie aura, doubtless written just hours, if not minutes, before his death. This lot requires 3rd party shipping.
