    Description

    Piece of the Last Flag Flown Over the Confederate Capital in Richmond. 7.5" x 3" section of the last Third National Flag flown over the Confederate capital at the time of its evacuation and subsequent occupation by Union forces. One binding hole in corner with paper remnant and adhesive residue on verso from previous mounting. It is accompanied by a period letter detailing its origin and history. The letter is written on "Office Chief Quarter-Master, 24th Army Corps" letterhead, Richmond, Virginia, May 10, 1865 and signed by A. B. Lawrence, Chief Quartermaster 24th A.C. & of the U.S. forces at Appomattox. He states: "This is to certify - That the fragment of bunting hereto attached is a piece of the Confederate Flag that floated over the Rebel Capital in this city, and was cut up for distribution as a significant memento of this war." He also discusses Confederate currency [not present] obtained from Robert E. Lee at Appomattox. Docketed on verso with file punch hole and minor edge loss. Sold together with a modern copy photo of Lawrence in his Civil War uniform.
