A remarkable adjunct to the previous Pelham lots.
Pelham Family Photograph Album, Circa 1885, Containing Several Cartes de Visite of John Pelham and His Brothers, Father, and Sister, along with a Silk Brocaded Vest Identified to Samuel Pelham. A 7.5" x 8.25" brown leather covered album with gilt stampings and gilt edged pages. Good condition but missing the clasp. The first fifteen pages of the album contain images, primarily cabinet cards, of extended Pelham family members. Page 16 contains a circa 1900 view of the John Pelham monument and a CDV-size copy of the original ambrotype, identified in the album as "Gallant Maj. John Pelham" with a pencil note on the verso "Maj. John Pelham/ Commander Pelham's/ Battery in Confederacy/ Rockbridge Artillery/ of Va", and attached at the lower left is a calling card for "Miss Pelham". Page 17 includes a circa 1880 portrait of a woman identified as (Carrie) Anita Pelham and an extremely rare, possibly the only example extant, from life, carte de visite bust portrait, identified in the album as "Gallant Maj. John Pelham" and on the back of the image "Jno Pelham/ Ala/ The Gallant Major/ Pelham". Pelham sports a rather unusual "spike" hairdo and is wearing civilian clothes. Page 18 includes a carte de visite identified as John's brother "Will C. Pelham/ of Maysville, KY." with additional period pencil ID on the verso. The verso also bears the logo of "Hoag & Quick's Art Palace/ Cincinnati, Ohio" with a three cent Federal tax stamp dating it to circa 1866. Will served with the 2nd Alabama Inf. and the 51st Alabama Partisan Rangers during the Civil War. Also on this page a circa 1880 CDV of "Rose Pelham Washington, D. C.".Page 19 includes a carte de visite bust portrait of Pelham's father, with the following pencil ID on the verso, "Dr. Atkinson Pelham of Jackson - near Anniston, Ala father of the Gallant Jno Pelham (four) other sons all who enlisted and fought in the Southern Army - father Maj Pelham who I know and Judge Chas (Pelham who I know)" Image bears the logo of C. C. Giers & Co. of Nashville, Tenn. Page 20 includes a carte de visite portrait identified on the verso as "Bettie Pelham Ala - Apr 1866" It was Bettie's great great grandson who inherited and consigned the ambrotype. Logo on the verso of "B. Z. Ganaway / Millersburg, Ky." with three cent revenue stamp, also a circa 1900 copy of a Civil War period portrait of "Maj. Peter Pelham of Ala bro of the Gallant Maj age 20". Peter Pelham served in the 1st Alabama Cavalry and the 51st Alabama Partisan Rangers. he was captured October 7, 1862, and paroled October 9. There are also several additional portraits of Peter as an elderly man along with other interesting Pelham family related images. All images in excellent condition.
The vest is a small size with a silk brocade front with three pockets and six small cloth covered buttons for closure. White cotton belted back with two tine brass buckle. The front bottom edge of the vest is lined with red Moroccan leather. The inside back of the vest exhibits a 1.25" x 2.25" oval ink stamp for "W. W. Walker / Draper & Tailor / Columbia, S. C." and the name "Sam'l (C.) Pelham" written in ink script on the inside of the vest just above the leather liner. Samuel, another of John's brothers, also served with the 51st Alabama Partisan Rangers. Vest in fine condition just showing some minor wear, with a few stains on the cotton back.
A great grouping representing another previously unknown chapter in the story of the "Gallant" Pelham and his remarkable family.
