Pair of Civil War Era United States Detective Silver Shield Badges.
The forerunner of the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Military Detectives served primarily under the direction of Col. Lafayette C. Baker and, in addition to being charged with enforcement of the draft and arresting deserters, were also tasked with investigating acts within the army such as payroll thefts and murders. US Military Detectives investigated the fire at the Colt Armory and were involved with the pursuit of Booth and his co-conspirators. It was U.S. Military Detectives who arrested Dr. Samuel Mudd. The protection of the President was a duty alternately assumed by U.S. Military Detectives and the Pinkerton Agency. One of the rarest of all U.S. law enforcement badges and an important Civil War artifact steeped in intrigue and romance. We sold a particularly nice example in a November, 2008 auction and with buyer's premium it fetched $5377.50. This lot includes two examples to B. F. Abbott. 1.) Silver, shield-shaped, pinback, stamped "B. F. Abbott / D." 48 x 48-mm; .41 ounces. 2.) A smaller version, silver, shield-shaped, pinback, and engraved in cursive script "B. F. Abbott / United States / Detective". 30 x 32-mm; .14 ounces.

Condition: Excellent. Both examples with age tarnish.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
