    Description

P1854 Austrian Lorenz .58 Caliber Percussion Short Rifle with the Three Line Civil War-Period Legend Deeply Carved on the Right Side of the Butt Stock: "A Trophy from/ Fort Fisher/ Jan 15 1865". Absolutely authentic and of the period. The gun itself is in superb untouched condition. All metal with smooth dark brown patina, the gun completely untouched/ uncleaned with absolutely no rust or pitting. Numbered 839 on the lock with FF on top of the barrel at the breech, along with Austrian proofs/ numbers on various parts. Wood excellent with dark untouched patina, just a couple of tiny very old chips and a set of initials lightly carved opposite the lock. Mechanically perfect, perfect bore. The ramrod is a period replacement from a US M1863 musket and doubtless used this way, else the gun is complete and original in every respect. Located at the mouth of the Cape Fear River in North Carolina, Federal forces initially attacked the fort in December 1864, but were repulsed. Finally, on January 15, 1865, a larger Federal force, supported by naval gunfire, assaulted the fort in an amphibious landing and forced its surrender. A great Civil War artifact with that elusive history of precise "time and place" much sought after by Civil War collectors.
