Outstanding Identification Badge of a Hard Fighting Massachusetts Infantryman. This large and ornate badge belonged to Pvt. John Steadman, Co. H, 16th Mass. Vol. Infantry. It consists of a silver disc, 1.25" in diameter, perhaps made from a burnished coin, on which is an embellished, low relief Third Corps "diamond" emblem. In the center of this is an openwork Second Corps trefoil, with black color added to the background to make it stand out. Outside the border of the Third Corps insignia is elegantly engraved "Co. H/ 16th REG. M.V./ 2nd DIV./ 1st BRIG." The reverse of the disc is engraved with battle honors: "Fair Oaks/ Glendale/ Malvern Hill/ Locust Grove/ Mine Run/ Wilderness/ Spottsylvania/ North Anna River/ Petersburg/ Cold Harbor." A silver ring attaches the disc to a suspension bar that is ornately embellished with geometric shapes. A similar bar meant to suspend the medal, with the engraved name "JOHN STEADMAN," is designed to be attached to it by a ribbon which is now missing. Private Steadman served in this embattled Army of the Potomac unit from its inception in June 1861 until it was mustered out in July 1864. The 16th was part of the 1st Brigade, Second Division of the Third Corps until March 1864 when it was moved to the Second Corps. Battle honors also included Second Manassas, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. A very impressive and attractive badge from a real fighting regiment.Auction Info
