    Description

Original Sheet Iron Civil War Sibley Stove Attributed to the Union Army 6th Corps Camp at the Battle of Antietam. Designed originally to warm the popular circular Sibley Tent, these unusual, portable and durable iron stoves became a staple of Union Army camp life and were used for warmth and cooking both inside and out of a variety of shelters. The stove measures 29" tall, with an 18" diameter base tapering to a 4" opening at the top. A hinged iron door measuring about 8" x 8" is set near the top and there is a small rounded opening at the base to assist ventilation. This example comes with a blacksmith-made warming tray, made from a iron keg hoop and a shelf riveted to it. This example was one of five stoves stored in a building on the Grove Farm and sold at a public sale of farming equipment about the turn of the century. They were purchased for use as smudge pots on family farms and orchards. All five stoves were purchased by a Washington County, Maryland in the 1970s. This example has some rust loss at the base with uniform pitting from exposure. Otherwise a great display item.
