Original J.D. Smith Illustration From Deeds of Valor "I Managed to Turn the Horse". Watercolor/ pen and ink wash. Signed in the lower left corner. Framed and matted to an overall size of 25" x 20.5"; sight size 17.5" x 13". From Deeds of Valor. From the Records of the United States Government. How American Heroes Won the Medal of Honor. Detroit: The Perrien-Keydel Company, 1906. Smith's dramatic illustration appears on page 128, Volume I of Deeds of Valor, and depicts Private Joseph R. Prentice of the 19th U.S. Infantry retrieving his mortally wounded Major's horse during the Battle of Stones River, Tennessee on December 31, 1862. Pvt. Prentice then retrieved Major Stephen D. Carpenter's body from the battlefield amid "the mournful dirge of the bullets that threatened me at every step." Major Carpenter's body can be seen in the distant background. Pvt. Prentice's Medal of Honor citation reads: "Voluntarily rescued the body of his commanding officer, who had fallen mortally wounded. He brought off the field his mortally wounded leader under direct and constant rifle fire." Deeds of Valor is a classic reference for Civil War collectors. An original illustration from this esteemed work would be a unique addition for the serious collector. The work has not been examined out of the frame, however the visible scene is bright and in fine condition.Auction Info
