    Description

Original J.D. Smith Illustration From Deeds of Valor "I Knelt Down, Still Holding the Flag in My Hands." Oil on canvas. Framed to an overall size of 22.5" x 17.5"; sight size 14.75" x 9.75". From Deeds of Valor. From the Records of the United States Government. How American Heroes Won the Medal of Honor. Detroit: The Perrien-Keydel Company, 1906. This illustration appears on page 259 of Deeds of Valor, Volume I, and depicts Sgt. William H. Carney, an African American of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry protecting the flag during an assault on Fort Wagner, South Carolina. Sgt. Carney was wounded several times while protecting the regiment's flag as he retreated against a strong Confederate assault. His citation reads: "When the color sergeant was shot down, this soldier grasped the flag, led the way to the parapet, and planted the colors thereon. When the troops fell back he brought off the flag, under a fierce fire in which he was twice severely wounded." This original work is in fine condition, still bright and with damage to the visible area. This original J.D. Smith illustration is one of three offered in this current auction. Each one individually or collectively would make an important and unique addition to a Civil War collection.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
