Original Civil War 34 Star Garrison or Building Flag. Overall dimension 92" x 158". This extraordinary flag features a 42½" x 42½" canton of blue damask wool on which 34 stars measuring approximately 4½" each have been hand-applied. A 1" wide section of brown wool is hand-sewn along the hoist on one side of the canton, presumably for reinforcement. A ¾" lanyard channel of canvas or similar material runs the length of the hoist and a ¼" diameter sisal lanyard is present. The field is composed of one large section of white wool on which red wool stripes, each about 7" wide have been hand sewn. A small length of the top and bottom red stripes at the fly-end are slightly brighter than the rest of the red stripes, either a reinforcement or an expediency. The fly-end and length of the flag are reinforced with a ¼" wide cotton hand-sewn border. For a flag of this large size, it has remained in extraordinary condition with only a 17" split in the canton on one side, a few scattered small holes near the fly-end, and some light damp staining. This flag was in use after January 29, 1861, with the admission of Kansas as the 34th state. Flags of this type and scale were typically used as garrison flags or flown over large buildings.
