Noteworthy 34 Star Flag Used by New Jersey Officer. This U.S. National flag still retains its bright colors and is in near perfect condition. It was first made as a 32 star flag with the unusual feature of both the stripes and the canton being printed on cotton, with the canton and two strips of red and white striping being separately hand sewn together to create the flag. The original printed stars, measuring 2½" from point to point, are arrayed in four equal rows of eight. To these were later added two additional stars of similar dimension to bring the flag up to the correct number for January 1861 through June 1863. These additional stars were hand cut from white cotton and nicely placed just inside and below the first and third rows of printed ones.

The flag belonged to John Ramsey, who began his military career as Captain of Co. G, 2nd N.J. Vol. Infantry in May 1861. He then transferred in August 1861 to Co. B, 5th N.J. Vol. Infantry where he rose to Lt. Col. In April 1863 he was appointed Colonel of the 8th N.J. Vol. Infantry and was eventually breveted Brigadier General and later Major General. The flag is in excellent condition with great colors and few signs of wear. It measures overall approximately 41" on the header and 82" on the fly. The flag has been professionally framed with an interior engraved plaque stating "Civil War Regimental Headquarters Flag of/ Col. John Ramsey 8th N.J. Vols./ Bvt. Maj. Gen. U. S. Vols." Showy and historic.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
