    Description

Near Mint Light Artillery Musician's Jacket Made at Schuylkill Arsenal. One of the Civil War's most attractive uniform coats, this U.S. Army regulation light artillery musician's jacket is in near perfect condition. The blue wool body is trimmed with 3/8" wide red worsted tape around the base, on the 2½" tall collar and in chevrons on the cuffs. It is highlighted by the striking "rack" design of red braid across the chest which distinguishes it as a musician's coat. The back seams are similarly trimmed with braid ending at the bottom in the two characteristic "pillows," created to help keep the saber belt around the wearer's waist. The interior lining of heavy white cotton is in similarly excellent condition. Stenciled in one sleeve is the size number "3" over "SA" showing manufacture at Philadelphia's Schuylkill Arsenal. There is also an inspector's stenciled "13." Both sleeves also have the typical inked "three dots" to designate size during the sewing process. The interior pocket is lined with a piece of polished cotton bearing a printed design, showing the arsenal's use of scraps of available material to complete its orders. Probably unissued, the garment also received a 20th century costumer's marking inside as well. This wonderful wartime manufacture piece is in overall excellent condition with all original buttons in place and only the most minor seam opening at the collar. Rare, complete and colorful.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
