Description

Nathan Bedford Forrest: Carte de Visite on a Plain Mount.

Forrest is regarded by many military historians as that conflict's most innovative and successful general. His tactics of mobile warfare are still studied by modern soldiers. After swiftly climbing the ranks despite his lack of formal training, in October 1861, he was given command of his own regiment, "Forrest's Tennessee Cavalry Battalion" and was promoted to lieutenant general in February 1865. This CDV features Forrest in his military uniform appearing stern and composed, as can be seen in The Confederate General: Volume 2, edited by William C. Davis and Julie Hoffman. The piece is unfortunately fragile, exhibiting tears, some loss, minor staining with toning, and some holes. It is encased in a 3.125" x 5.25" plexiglass holder with the piece itself measuring 2.75" x 3.875". Despite the imperfect condition, the contrast and portrait itself are still very attractive from the details on his uniform to his steely gaze. Overall, this would still be a lovely addition to a collection. The B.G. Chip Newman Collection
