Marvelous Gold 12th Army Corps/ Unit Badge of a Connecticut Officer. This is a truly beautiful badge of the finest quality, belonging to Captain Edwin Eliphalet Marvin, Co. F, 5th Conn. Vol. Infantry. The badge consists of an impressive 12th/ 20th Corps "star" measuring about 1.75" from point-to-point. In the center is an asymmetrical foliate wreath flanked by two tiny American flags, with a deep blue enamel riband intertwined at the bottom having the Latin motto "Qui Transtulit Sustinet." Rays extend from that wreath and within it is a blue enamel field in which is embedded the "three vines" symbol from the Connecticut state flag. In the middle is affixed a gold regimental numeral "5." The reverse is skillfully engraved with the battle honors: "Winchester, Cedar Mountain, Chancellorsville/ Gettysburgh, Resaca, Cassville, Dallas/ Culps Farm, Lost Mountain/ Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta/ Savannah, Charleston/ Silver Run, Bentonville." The star is attached by a blue ribbon to a gold, rectangular suspension bar which is engraved "CAPT. EDWIN E. MARVIN." The original t-bar clasp is on the reverse. Condition is excellent and the detail is superb. Marvin enlisted as a lieutenant in June 1861 and was promoted captain in May 1862. He resigned on February 12, 1863. The unit was with the 5th and 2nd Corps before becoming part of the 12th Corps in September 1862 and, then, the 20th Corps in August 1864. A handsome badge representing a great Civil War unit.Auction Info
