Major William H. Munn, 14th Vermont Inf.: Scarce Hancock's Old Corps (1st) Badge. 1 3/8" finely engraved silver spread wing eagle with very early and quite heavy safety pin style back. Very heavy 1¼" silver Hancock's Old Corps badge suspended form two chains. Edges elaborately engraved with the central 1st Corps badge recessed and stippled. Inscribed around the center "Presented to Wm. H. Munn By Co. F. 24th Regt." Military records show Munn enlisting as a 1st Lt. in the 14th Vt. October 7, 1862 and promoted to Capt. February 15, 1863, but do not reflect the rank of major. (Note: Munn's 1915 obituary in the New York Times mentions a promotion to colonel). The 14th Vermont served in the 1st Corps for the last month of their service when they were heavily engaged at Gettysburg being instrumental in the repulse of Pickett's charge. The discrepancy in the regimental number is also a mystery but most likely a unit Munn served with after his discharge on July 30, 1863 from the 14th. Rare badge with an intriguing history.
