    Description

A stunning sword in truly incredible condition.

Magnificent Civil War Cased, Presentation Grade, Schuyler, Hartley and Graham Sword with Interesting History. The sword is overall absolutely mint, the finest condition example we've ever seen. Casing also about mint, with just a few minor handling marks on the exterior of the beautifully grained walnut case. This exact sword is pictured on pages 366 - 367 in the color photo section in Tillman's Civil War Army Swords: A Study of United States Army Swords From 1832 Through 1865. Gold embossed Schuyler, Hartley & Graham logo on the blue silk pad in the lid of the case. The top of the case is slightly domed and utilizes gilded brass fittings for closure, as well as a lock, although there is no key. Blue silk lining overall about perfect. The sword has a 32" blade with etched scroll work panels at the base, and panel with scroll work and spread wing eagle on the obverse and US on the reverse. Iron proof on the back with W. Clauberg Solingen mark, with standing knight on the reverse ricasso. Retains the original red wool washer. Brass hilt having the basket pierced with oak leaf and acorn motif, eaglehead quillon. The inboard face of the guard engraved with scroll and floral motif. Massive pommel cap with eagle and shield on the face, surmounted by full bodied eagle on the top. Cast silver grip with Lady Liberty with shield on the obverse and oval red semi-precious stone surrounded by relief scroll work on the reverse. Polished steel scabbard with massive gilded brass mounts and two brass carrying rings. Top mount with two female figures holding a wreath over a panel, that was obviously meant to be inscribed. Drapes and tassels at the bottom. Middle mount is 10" long with scroll work, leaf and geometric designs and multiple piercings, with deep relief US on the central panel. The 8" lower mount incorporates a deep relief cast grotesque mask with engraved scroll work and geometric designs with piercings. The drag is very heavy pierced scroll work. Interestingly, included with the casing is a 33" long, 2 5/8" wide, Woodlands Indian beaded sash with a silk backing with individual pockets for use obviously as a money belt. On each pocket can clearly be seen the impression of a coin, most likely a $10 gold piece.

The sword was given to Lyman B. Goff, who served during the war as a Lt. Col. of Artillery in the Rhode Island militia, but saw no active Civil War service. Goff was a Rhode Island Industrialist and went on to become one of the wealthiest men in the state.
