    Description

Magnificent Carved Civil War Pipe, Isaac H. Boyd 19th Mass. Inf. Died of Wounds Received at Farmville, Virginia 4/10/65. Boyd enlisted in the 19th Mass. Inf. on 8/22/61 and was commissioned into Co. A 8/28/61. He participated in all the major actions of the regiment, most of which are recorded on the pipe and was mortally wounded at Farmville 4/7/65 dying three days later on 4/10/65. He was commissioned but not mustered as Major, serving as the Inspector General for the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 2nd Corps. The pipe is 3" high and 1 5/8" across the octagonal top of the bowl, flaring to a wider diameter at the base. The pipe is carved of burl wood and includes, carved in deep relief, the following battles; Forlorn Hope, Edward's Ferry, Balls Bluff, Yorktown, Fair Oaks, White Oak Swamp, Savage's Station, Glen Dale, Malvern Hill, Flint Hill, South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg. Indicating the pipe was completed in late 1862 or early 1863. All but two of the battles are carved in relief, with Edwards Ferry and South Mountain incise carved on relief panels on the sides. Boyd's regiment is incise carved on the front with his name also, incise carved, on the back. There are relief carved panels on either side at the front, one of a naked female, the other of a naked male. It retains what is apparently the original burl wood stem with a chip at the top and a wooden base carved specifically to rest the pipe on. Perfect overall condition with nice rich patina, the carving very well done. Obviously heavily smoked and there is a vent hole at the back of the pipe bowl apparently to allow the intake of extra air when being smoked. The regiment was heavily engaged throughout the war including all major eastern theater actions subsequent to Fredericksburg including Gettysburg, losing 161 men killed and mortally wounded. A magnificent carved Civil War pipe identified to a gallant 'fighting' officer. Superb untouched condition overall.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
