Louis Prang et al: Extensive Collection of Engraved Cartes-de-Visite.
The highlight of this lot are four original deluxe album pages each housing eight engraved CDVs by Prang. These were probably part of a special, limited edition album published for sale to well-heeled clientele or given as gifts by the publisher to special customers and friends. Each CDV is surrounded by a gold border and the coated-stock pages likewise have gold rules. The back sides are blank. Accompanied by a cover sheet inscribed "Lewis Prang Engraver on Wood." in ornate lettering. Sold together with a 3.5" x 5.5" hardbound book titled "Officers of Our Union Army and Navy Vol. 1", published by L. Prang of Boston and Washington, D.C. in 1862. It contains illustrations that match many of the stand-alone CDVs they issued during the early days of the war. The book is in great shape. They are two "errant" photographic CDVs and a large collection of loose engraved CDVs, published by both Prang and Bufford. These are in a variety of styles. We have organized these into appropriate "piles". There are ten examples by Bufford of Confederate commanders and leaders, forty-one examples printed in two colors (condition varies with some duplicates, spotting and trimming), sixty-four examples by Bufford with gold borders (many examples depicting personalities rarely encountered in this or any other format), nineteen examples by Bufford with color borders and "recessed" corners in the design, thirty-one examples by Prang on a plain white background (some printed on thin paper stock, others on thick stock, some duplicates and foxing), twenty-nine examples by Prang with green ruled borders (some duplicates, foxing, trimming). We also include an 1855 secretarially-signed Franklin Pierce land grant and an unrelated 1888 General Land Office document. While there are a few non-military cartes in the collection (George & Martha Washington, Garibaldi, John & Jessie Fremont, Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, Stephen and Adele Douglas, Parson Brownlow, etc., the overwhelming majority is Civil War related. Condition varies on the loose examples, as stated, but generally good. An impressive collection.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
