    Description

Lot of Nine Items Pertaining to Company I, 88th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and 2nd Lieutenant Eldridge Le Van. Eldridge Le Van (also spelled Levan) mustered into F Company of the 88th PA on September 13, 1861 as a private. He was transferred to I company on January 1, 1862. He rose through the ranks and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on April 10, 1863. This lot contains several items pertaining to the 88th PA as well as several items unique to Le Van. Included is: 1) a framed patriotic vignette featuring eagles above and below the text "Eldridge Le Van/ 88th Penna./ Co. I/ 1865". The piece measures 16½" x 18½" overall. 2) A chromolithograph memorial featuring all the engagements the 88th PA participated in surmounted by a colorful eagle and flag motif and surrounded by corps badges. This particular memorial was owned by 88th veteran David Gillmor. The memorial was issued by Post No. 16 of the GAR, Department of Pennsylvania. The memorial is in a contemporary frame and measures 17½" x 26" overall. There is some damp staining at the bottom but the piece is generally in very good condition. 3) Two wooden canes - both measuring about 35½", one with metal tip, extensively carved and with the text "Presented to by J. T. Jones/ E. LV 88th/ Penna"; the other carved with his initials "ELV" and "Little Round Top". 4) Sharpening soapstone mounted in a wooden case, with Le Van's "ELV" initials carved lightly in the inside lid. 5) Small chair whittled from a single piece of wood with "ELV" lightly scratched on the rear of the backrest. 6) Small compass/sundial in a wooden case with "E. Le Van/ 88th Penna Vol/ Reading Pa" lightly inscribed on the back. 7) Relic "bull's eye" canteen with spout and base separated but still attached by old leather strap. The canteen has been decorated with red, white, and blue and reads "1861 to 1865/ July 9th/ Presented to/ Edwin Le Van/ 88th/ Penna Vols/ Found in Ashes of/ Gettysburg". Edwin Le Van was Eldridge's brother and both men were in the same unit. 8) Exceptional wooden whimsical carving comprised of four interlocking sections, one end decorated with a "foot", the other with an animal head, which, when spread apart form a base for a vase or similar decorative object.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
