Letter Written by Pvt. Richard B. Loomis, Co. H, 21st Mass. Vols, detailing his wounding at Petersburg June 18, 1864, by a Confederate sharpshooter 4¾" x 8", 4 pages, unsmudged pencil script, folio, on U. S. Christian Commission stationary, headed "U. S. General Hospital, Beverly , N. J. August 17th [1864]. "I suppose you have been informed the Johnnies have at last made a hole in me....I was hit by a Confederate sharpshooter, was sitting on the ground, my back against a tree reading a paper. I heard the report of [a] rifle at the same instant felt the ball near my bowels, left side....the ball entered about three inches below the heart, struck the rib, followed it & came out under my left arm". Loomis goes on to describe the primitive conditions to which he was subjected upon receiving medical care, "in the Div. Hops., wound dressed & laid on the floor...for 24 hours...I suffered terribly...after a couple days was sent to City Point...a boatload of 650 of us were sent down the James....I was crowded into the hold hardly any air". After he arrives at the hospital at Beverly, N. J. he reports "the head surgeon ... don't want ladies prowling around...I am losing flesh...I have no clothes except hospital shirt and drawers", much additional detailed information. Loomis enlisted in the 21st Mass. in August 1861 and re-enlisting Jan. 1, 1864. He survived his wound, joining GAR Post #174 in Greenfield, Mass., dying in 1906. Crisp legible script, some weakness at folds, minor, complete with original envelope. In addition to the account of his wounding a remarkable insight into the primitive conditions faced by Civil War casualties. Great letter.
