Description
Julian Scott, "Between Rounds", 1887, oil on canvas, 20" x 15.75", framed to an overall size of 26.5" x 30.5", signed lower right "Julian Scott '87", The painting has some craquelure and slight paint loss, else, very fine. It has been professionally cleaned and relined. The painting is very evocative, with three members of a gun crew and a drummer playing cards on a drumhead, under the shade of a canvas cover. This painting is clearly based on Julian Scott's personal experiences in the Civil War. Scott was only fifteen at the outbreak of the Civil War. He lied about his age and enlisted in the Third Vermont Infantry. Too small for soldiering, he became a drummer in Company E, which took part in the Battle of Lee's Mills during the Peninsular Campaign. Although a non-combatant, Scott braved heavy fire to save nine wounded men from the battlefield, an act of heroism for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, thus earning the first citation for an individual act of battlefield courage in the Civil War. At the Battle of White Oak Swamp Scott was severely wounded in the hip by a Minnie ball and was sent to a hospital on Long Island Sound for a long period of recovery. While Julian was convalescing he was noticed by a visitor, who took a liking to him and supplied the youngster with drawing materials. Scott returned to the war in the spring of 1864, but this time solely as an artist. He was named an honorary aide-de-camp to Gen. William F. ("Baldy") Smith in Gen. Benjamin Butler's "Army of the James" near Richmond. After Appomattox, Scott returned to the Virginia battlefields to sketch and to gather materials for his projected life's work, the production of meticulously detailed canvases on which he depicted major engagements in the war or the quiet moments of camp life and the marches between the battles. Scott used the theme of soldiers playing cards and drummers in several of his more notable paintings.Auction Info
