Description

Joslyn Model 1855 "Monkey Tail" .54 Caliber Percussion Carbine Rarely found in this exceptional condition with estimated production of under 1500, with 1200 sold to the U.S. Government. Barrel retains much original blue mixing with smooth dark patina, lock showing case colors with lever smooth and gray. Very good brass mountings, the band stamped "M 5". The lockplate is marked "A.H. WATERS & CO./MILBURY, MASS" in two lines and the top of the lever bears the markings "PATd BY/B.F. JOSLYN/AUG. 23, 1855" in three lines. All marks are clear and distinct. Mechanically perfect, fine bore. Walnut stock with sharp edges, just some minor handling marks. These guns are known to have been issued to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th Ohio Cavalry early in the Civil War. Exceptional example of a very scarce US martial carbine.
