    Description

    J. E. B. "Jeb" Stuart: Maryland Raid Tent Relic. The material in this lot originally was contained in the scrapbook of Rev. John Collins McCabe (1810-1875). McCabe briefly served as the Chaplain of the 32nd Virginia and was also "Chaplain General" of the Richmond prisons. The highlight of this group is a 4" x 5 1/2" section of canvas with a period note attached, reading: "J. E. B. Stuart's tent, Urbana, Frederick Co. Md. Raid into Maryland." The famous raid, a.k.a. the "Chambersburg Raid" took place October 10-12, 1862, following the Battle of Antietam. It was enormously successful in capturing supplies and led to the dismissal of McClellan by President Lincoln. The group includes a wide range of ephemera culled from the scrapbook, including: a four-page manuscript on the "Laws of Chess", a small program for an 1866 dramatic performance, an 1861 handbill containing a poem by McCabe opposing Bishop Whittingham's bull demanding that clergyman should still publicly pray for the President of the United States, a war-time ballot from Richmond, two envelopes addressed to Miss Alice McCabe and a manuscript poem of a romantic nature likely written by Alice.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
