Interesting Group of Civil War Period and Earlier Cased Medical Instruments. The group consists of: a 3 1/2" X 8 1/4" X 1 1/2" high leather covered wood case with blue velvet lining and blue silk padded lid, which is marked in gilt "A. Young / 58 Northbridge / Edinburgh" The case contains in a French style compartment, three massive bone chisels, each 7 5/8" overall, with the blades being of slightly different width. Each chisel numbered/graduated on the side. All with some scattered light surface rust but would clean nicely to excellent or better. Chisels numbered 1, 2, 3 and each bears maker's mark of Young. Case intact but somewhat shaken and should be properly reglued.; very scarce cased, what we believe to be , W & H Hutchinson enema pump. 8 1/2" overall and all brass construction with the exception of the telescoping tube, contained in the smaller brass tube, and the pewter nozzle. An embossed brass lable affixed to this tube reads, " Invented By / W & H Hutchinson Sheffield / Registered 30 October 1840 / No 44" The larger brass tube incorporates a pump handle. Perfect complete condition retaining much of the original gilt finish. Form fitted mahogany casing 9 1/2" long and 1 3/4" high with brass lock escutcheon. Lined with green velvet in the bottom and padded green silk in the top. Case overall in really excellent condition with just a couple of worn spots in the lid from the pressure of the instrument; a 4 3/4" when closed, period glass syringe with glass plunger in the original wooden storage case, perfect condition; a 3 3/4" X 6" X 1 1/4" high wooden case covered with black leather with two small brass hooks for closure. Case is lined in maroon velvet and contains what appears to be a fluid evacuation kit. Kit contains a set of tweezers, two perforators with checkered horn handles, and one threaded with a movable disc to allow the depth to be set, a German silver tube with cupped end for attachment to the pump, and a 5" long, 3/4" diameter brass evacuation pump. Some minor scattered surface rust but would clean nicely, excellent, with the brass pump being perfect. Each instrument in a form fitted compartment. The case is overall near perfect. A rare grouping of specialized early medical instrument kits.
