Important U.S. Civil War M1850 Staff & Field Officer's Sword Inscribed on the Top Mount, "Presented/ To/ Col. Clinton B. Fisk/ By The /Scholars & Teachers/ Of The S. M. S. School". Clinton Bowen Fisk was appointed Colonel commanding the 33rd Missouri Inf. on September 5, 1862. Subsequently organizing a brigade, he was appointed Brigadier General on November 24, 1862, serving most of the war fighting Confederate guerillas in Missouri and Arkansas, He was brevetted to Major General March 13, 1865. Fisk was appointed as a senior administrator of the Freedman's Bureau immediately after the war and, in 1866, founded and endowed the Fisk School in Nashville, now Fisk University, an historically black college, and the first African American Institution to gain accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The sword is in superb condition. The 34" blade is near mint with P. D. L. cartouche at the base of the reverse ricasso. Etched with arms panoplies, eagle motto, scrollwork on obverse, and similar motifs with American flag and large US on reverse, just a few very minor stains. Regulation hilt about perfect, retaining most of the original gilt. Sharkskin grip perfect, wire loose but intact. Still retains a portion of the original bullion sword knot. Steel scabbard retains most of the original lacquer brown finish, no dents, with the brass mounts retaining most of the original gilt, just a couple of tiny dents on the reverse of the lower mount. Inexplicably the brass screws are missing from all the mounts, easily replaced. An historically important Civil War sword, in superb untouched condition.
