Important Grouping Associated With Capt. John Christia Peterson, including Lincoln Signed Commission. Group includes the following: 15" X 19" standard form, eagle masthead, vellum commission for Peterson as Captain in the 15th US Inf., dated 28 April 1862 and signed by both Abraham Lincoln and Edwin Stanton. Fine sound condition with bold signatures in period gilt frame. Just one 1/4" X 7" light stain along the bottom edge not affecting document or value; an 8" X 10" albumen or salt image of Peterson with watercolor highlighting, showing Peterson in regulation captain's uniform with fringed epaulettes, sword belt and sash, which is tinted red, holding sword in front of him and Hardee hat with plume on the table at his side, with infantry horn insignia on front with "15" in the center. About perfect condition in the original period gilt gesso frame.; Peterson attended West Point from July 1848 to June 1849 and also included is his original West Point coatee in superb condition. As would be expected rather small size with tight sleeve cut. Retains all but one the original ball buttons with "EXTRA RICH" backmark. Eight button front, triple breasted gray wool and piped with black twill cord on the front, cuffs, tails and collar which stands 1 5/8" at back. Cuff closure affected with two hook and eye attachments along with three similar attachments at the front of the collar. The breasts and upper body portions of the coat are lined with gray wool. The back lined with white cotton with Peterson's initials, "JCP" in 1" high ink block letters. White cotton sleeve lining which is missing in the left sleeve. The bottom three hand whipped button holes are reinforced/lined on the inside with brown leather. Overall superb condition with just a couple of tiny really insignificant moth nips. An extremely rare American military coatee. Also included in this grouping: a 3 3/4" x 5" oval image of Peterson on a 7 3/4" x 9 1/2" mount, signed below: "Yours Respectfully/ J. C. Peterson" in good condition; and a Civil War period carte de visite of Peterson with a Senter & Fowler (Auburn NY) backmark, fine save for one crease.

Peterson served with the 15th US Inf. from his commissioning in 1862 until his resignation on 11 August 1864. The regiment saw considerable action in the southern theater during Peterson's term of service and lost a total of 134 men killed and mortally wounded. A remarkable grouping for both rarity and historical import.
