Identified Berdan's Sharps Rifle Serial Number 57077, With Company F 1st USSS Record Book Listing the Owner and the Rifle. Sharps New Model 1859 rifle manufactured as part of a 2000 rifle contract executed by the Ordnance Department on January 27 and February 6, 1862 to arm the 1st and 2nd United States Sharpshooters Regiments. Composed of expert marksmen selected by Colonel Hiram S. Berdan, the two USSS regiments fought with the Army of the Potomac for most of the Civil War. The Berdan Sharpshooter's M1859 Sharps Rifles were specially fitted with double set triggers and had angular socket bayonets. Most of the Berdan Sharps Rifles fall in the 54,374-57,574 serial range.
This rifle, serial number 57,077, is in excellent condition with sharp numbers and lettering and is mechanically perfect. The lock, barrel bands and buttplate all exhibit a smooth gray patina with traces of casehardening. The blue finish on the barrel has aged to a smooth, plum brown, patina. Bright bore. The stock and forearm are in excellent condition with sharp edges and a few minor handling marks. The script "JT" inspection mark on the left side of the stock is sharp and clear.
This Sharps rifle was issued to William J. Domag, Company F. 1st United States Sharpshooters, who enlisted 8/15/1862 and was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness 5/5/1864.
Included with the rifle is the record book of Lt Charles W. Seaton, Company F. 1st United States Sharpshooters. The record book lists the "Gov't Property in hands of each Private". The book records that at Falmouth Virginia on December 1, 1862, W.J Domag was issued "1 pc tent, 1 blanket, 1 canteen, hav. sack, gun sling, cap box, cap box waist belt, gun brush" and Sharps serial number 57077. Signed and dated by Wm. J. Domag.
The record book measures 7 5/8" X 9 5/8" and lists each private in Co F, 1st USSS, what equipage they were issued and when they were issued. The book is fully intact, each listing in clear script ink with strong color. The covers shows expected wear but the binding is intact.
This historic Sharps Rifle in excellent untouched condition and would be difficult to improve upon.
