I.D.'d Union Model-1858 Cavalry Officer's Forage "McDowell" Cap. 7 inches wide by 8 inches long. Dark blue wool throughout with characteristic high crown and small leather bill. An oval velvet panel with embroidered wreathed "U. S." insignia is sewn to the face. The underside of the bill is etched with the initials "E. B.". The underside of the tan leather sweatband is inscribed "Lt. Eustace/ Bigelow 1st Maine Cav/ & Gen Gregg Staff". Bigelow enlisted as Quartermaster Sergeant on the staff of the 1st Maine Cavalry on October 31, 1861. He was promoted twice, first as Commissary Sergeant and finally as 2nd Lieutenant of Company F. He served until December 30, 1863 when he was discharged for disability, the result of being thrown from his horse and sustaining a severe spinal injury. He later developed head problems, possibly brain trauma, and was committed to an insane asylum. He escaped in 1902 and committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a passing train. The leather chinstrap retains its original brass buckle and is secured by two small Maine state staff officer buttons. The cap's interior has a wide leather sweatband and is lined on the sides with a dark cloth. There are a few minor repairs to the fabric and the front of the sweatband has been re-stitched. Expected crazing to the leather elements and wear to the sweatband, otherwise, excellent condition. This is a superb and classic early Civil War "McDowell" cap. It is accompanied by an extensive file with provenance, regimental history, personal history and military record of the unfortunate Bigelow.
