    Description

Historic Civil War Grouping of Rodney G. Hathaway, 67th Ohio Vol. Inf. Hathaway enlisted in the 67th on 11/1/61 as 1st Sgt, and served in that capacity until his promotion to 2d Lieut. on 12/8/63, and 1st Lieut. 2/18/64, mustering out 11/10/64.
The 67th Ohio was heavily engaged throughout their term of service losing 142 men killed and mortally wounded. The group includes the following: Officer's quality kepi doubtless acquired for use by Hathaway subsequent to his promotion to Lieut.. Fine quality blue wool, 3" high at the front, 1 1/4" high oil cloth sweat band. The lining is padded with cotton and of lightweight brown wool cloth. The crown of maroon leather, which, although not bearing a maker's mark, is elaborately embossed with an eagle and stars, surmounting an American shield with panoplies of flags and arms and motto, very striking. The visor edge is bound with a narrow strip of oil cloth. There is a 3/8" wide tarred leather chin strap, button hole partially torn at one end, and there are no side buttons. The visor is detached but in excellent condition and easily restorable, with the interior showing some honest wear and use on the sweat band, and a few holes worn in the lining, exposing the cotton padding. Blue wool body of the hat with some minor fading, else about perfect. Overall a very nice and easily restorable Civil War kepi.; A standard issue Federal musket cap box. Unmarked, in excellent condition, but no wool.; two hand carved and inlaid wooden rings. The perfect example is inlaid with what appear to be silver stars and hearts, with a star and crescent center piece. The other ring was identical but is badly broken.; Hathaway's pocket diary for the year 1862 while he was 1st Sgt. of the Regt. 3 1/2" X 5 3/4", black oil cloth covered. Signed by Hathaway several times on the title page. Hathaway was not a consistent diarist, and limited his entries to days when he deemed occurrences warranted recording, however, his entries are extremely articulate, detailed and perceptive with approx. 30 pages filled with neat ink and pencil script accounts, along with many other shorter entries. Includes detailed entries of the regiment's movements and actions at Winchester and Port Republic. Really an exceptionally well written, and highly detailed, diary as kept by a very observant and skilled diarist. Exterior of the diary clearly shows honest use, with the interior about perfect with minimal smudging to the pencil entries. Wonderful grouping descended through the family and consigned by a direct lineal descendant.
