    Description

Grouping of New Jersey Infantryman Wounded at Chancellorsville. Here are a variety of items that belonged to 1st Sgt. Isaac Barnes, Co. A, 5th N.J. Vol. Infantry, who was wounded at Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863. The group is highlighted by Barnes' scarce New Jersey Civil War Veterans Medal. Issued around 1908 to all living veterans of the state, the circular bronze decoration hangs from a pin-back bar bearing the state seal and is numbered on the reverse 3390 with the "Mayes Bros. Co." makers mark as well. The reverse of the disk is engraved with Barnes name along with relief wording: "Presented by the State of/ New Jersey/ to/ (Barnes name)/ Veteran/ of the Union Forces/ in the/ Civil War/ 1861-1865." The front of the disc has a soldier/ cannon/ flag patriotic motif and the words "Ready to Die for the Honor of Our Country." Also in the grouping is Barnes outstanding, heavy silver post war identification badge in the diamond shape of a 2.25 inch high Third Corps emblem. The medal has an engraved border and in the center is "Co. A/ I Barnes/ 5th Reg/ N.J.V./ 1862" in beautiful script. It retains its long fastening pin on the reverse. A third badge is the GAR 46th National Encampment official souvenir medal from Los Angeles, California in 1912.

Other items with the grouping include a Civil War and a post war general service button, a flag pin and a mouth harp. There are also several Sons of Veterans, GAR and encampment ribbons along with seven post war photos taken at different ages in Barnes' life from a very dapper young man to an equally dapper older gentleman.

Barnes enlisted in August 1861 and following his wounding at Chancellorsville was discharged for disability on October 24, 1863. Pension records, which are included, show he died in 1922.
