Grouping of Civil War Artifacts and Miscellaneous Items. These items were accumulated by W.O. Stafford in the years immediately after the Civil War, who possibly had Ohio antecedents, but apparently settled in California in his later years. This is a diverse lot of material, most of which appears to be annotated in Stafford's hand. Stafford's name doesn't show up in the Civil War database so he likely just acquired these items along the way. The Civil War items include: 1.) Framed silk fragment from an Ohio Regiment's flag framed under glass in a period 4 x 5 ¼-inch oval wood frame. Stafford's note on the reverse indicates the flag was carried by the regiment at the battle of Pittsburgh Landing, Murfreesboro, Corinth, Perrysville, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge where it was carried to the enemy's works on the crest of a hill by five color bearers, all killed. 2.) Pewter tobacco box "taken from the pocket of one of Anderson guerillas killed in a skirmish in Caloway Co. Missouri." 3.) U.S. oval brass belt plate "worn by one of Col. Shackleford's men at the taking of John Morgan Ohio." 4.) Sword belt and brass belt plate. In addition the lot includes a Union infantry button, 1891 California shooting club 14k medal (20.4 gr.), sterling silver box, pins, a pass from California governor's office for "W. H. Stafford and his team" to pass through the lines in San Francisco (earthquake related).

Condition: All items very good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
