Group of Two Swords. Includes: (1) A Civil War foot officer's sword, marked "Horstmann & Sons" on the reverse ricasso, and "Philadelphia" on the obverse. Strongly curved 30" blade is unetched. Sword overall excellent, hilt perfect, as is the grip, retaining all the leather and wrapped with twisted brass wire flanked by single strand wire. Blade with just some light surface rust, mixing with gray patina, and some touches of luster. The sword is in a M1860 cavalry saber. Fits fine, but the scabbard is 6" longer than the blade, and missing the throat. Scabbard excellent with deep dark patina and just some very minor surface rust, no dents. There are what appear to be small museum accession numbers painted at the top of the scabbard. (2) The other sword utilizes a 32" slightly curved quill back blade, which is excellent. The blade is etched but with very dark patina and just some very minor surface rust, making it difficult to discern specific patterns other than scroll work and arms panoplies. The all iron hilt reminiscent of an eighteenth century basket hilt, with a decoratively pierced cup, surrounded by pierced scallops, with the outboard guard utilizing three branches that curl at the hilt and are riveted to the knuckle bow (one rivet missing) The inboard guard displays one branch similarly curled and affixed, The inside of the cup is lined with black leather and red wool felt. Leather covered grip tapering at top and bottom. Leather perfect, the very fine gauge twisted wire loose/ broken but appears to be all there. The ball like pommel, which exhibits a hole on one side, sits atop an upper grip ferrule that extends down both sides of the grip. There is also an ornate heavy iron guard, that also possibly served as the scabbard throat with curled ends and knurled center section. Two interesting nineteenth century swords in excellent untouched condition.
