For both form and historical context, a truly exceptional Confederate knife.

Great Confederate Bowie Knife and Sheath with Period ID to "Capt. St. Clair T. Deane/ Co. B/ 2nd Bn. Va. H. Arty". This is inscribed on a 0.625"" x 2.125" bone plaque, inlaid on the obverse side of the handle. Absolutely authentic and of the period. The knife was purchased by the consignor from a family member at the Maryland Antique Arms Show in 1961. 17.125" overall with massive 11.375" double edge spear point blade with a median ridge. The blade is 2" wide at the base, tapering to a heavy 1.25" ricasso. Blade excellent, untouched, with just some scattered staining and a small patch of very light pitting near the ricasso. All iron mounted with 3/16" thick S-shaped cross guard, iron grip ferrule and iron pommel, all made as one piece. The grip is shaped to fit the hand and is composed of plaques of black composition material (probably gutta percha) molded with a diamond shaped pattern. Hilt, including bone inlaid plaque, perfect and untouched. The plaque with a rich mellow age patina. The neatly side stitched leather scabbard, with leather reinforcing pieces at throat and bottom, which are excellent. The body of the scabbard shows considerable insect/worm damage but remains intact.

Deane was originally Captain of the "Greene Rough & Readys" a unit formed in Stanardsville, Virginia in May 1861, which was subsequently identified as "Capt. S. T. Deane's Batt'n of Artillery" in July 1861. The unit became part of the 4th Va. Hvy. Arty in September/ October 1862 and was subsequently absorbed by the 34th Virginia Inf. with whom Deane served during the Siege of Petersburg in 1864. Accompanied by a complete set of Deane's records. For both form and historical context a truly exceptional Confederate knife, offered here for the first time.
